About the Exhibition

Renowned for his experimental methods—using materials like soot, tyres, milk, and whips—Jiří Georg Dokoupil presents a dynamic exhibition for VS’s inaugural season. The Czech-German artist showcases his Soap-Bubble paintings, new glass sculptures, and a selection from Furniture for Photos.

Spanning 30 years, the Soap-Bubble series captures Dokoupil’s playful yet profound approach. By blowing pigment-infused bubbles onto canvas, he creates luminous, vanitas-inspired works that balance spontaneity and control, echoing the rococo grandeur of the palace setting. Two pieces, commissioned for the baroque chapel, are animated by their ornate surroundings.

His Homemade Venetian Bubbles, created with Czech glassmakers, reflect both their environment and the viewer’s shifting perception. Created specifically for the ‘Blue Room,’ the artist has crafted new glass sculptures in a palette of pure blue tones. These forms—at once opaque and metallic—engage in a dynamic dialogue with the surrounding new paintings, which radiate a striking elegance and ethereal presence through their nuanced shades of different blue.

In contrast, Furniture for Photos (2016) invites interaction. These minimalist sculptures function as both stage and prop, activated only when visitors engage, blurring boundaries between object, image, and participant.
